The Westside Mobile Food Market is a joint effort of The South Granville Seniors Centre and The Westside Food Collaborative. This one year pilot project will assist seniors and other vulnerable people living on Vancouver’s Westside in “food deserts” – zones with few or no grocery stores or produce stands. Although this project was inspired by the seniors in our commuity, our markets are open to everyone, because we feel that everybody deserves to be able to access farmers’ market quality food that fits within their budget.
From July 16th 2014 onwards, the mobile market will stop at community gathering places and deliver fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables to communities who would have a hard time accessing fresh produce otherwise.
Over the last years, mobile food markets have appeared in many cities all over the world as a way of getting affordable, fresh, and healthy produce to people who have difficulties accessing this kind of food, because it is sold in stores too far outside their neighbourhoods and is too expensive.
This market on wheels will be the first on to service Vancouver’s Westside, an area that is — surprising to many — home to food deserts.
